Hello June.  It’s always good to rise up to meet you.

For us northern hemisphere dwellers, you catalyze the energy of potentiality, produce the widest flames of light, and draw us to the apex of another calendar pilgrimage around the sun.

And as for Ms. SoulButter, you also mark some of my greatest personal celebrations of living, leaping and loving.

Teacher June, you have enlightened me on the excitable nature of the heart crush, how it propels we humans forward by magnetic force to love or by a slingshot away from suffering. Though these would appear to be opposites on a lifeline, you have given me experiences to see the commonality in their one shared ability: both can spark the fuse of our firecracker dreams-in-the-making.

Experience #1:

I arrived a “lucky 13” days early into this wild world during the heat of your solstice.  3am. A delicious time of early morning when the promise of a new day is in early incubation.

Magnetic Force to love.

Experience #2:

You must’ve known I’d have a penchant for flying when I was born with Dysplasia, the fancy medical terminology for Developmental Dislocation of the head of the femur bone from the acetabulum, or as slang would easily call it, “legs out of the hip sockets”. I learned to walk with a metal brace between my legs while strengthening my spirit of “I can” against the early neighsaying “she won’ts” from doctors: “she probably won’t be able to do things like acrobatics and certain sports”. As a determined toddler thankfully born with a hefty supply of curiosity, I went on to tackle the “won’ts” of these hips… breaking a high school record for 100 meter high hurdles, teaching dance and yoga and rehabilitative fitness to anyone with the attitude of “I’ll try”, and hiking the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal where my strong legs led me over the tallest pass in the world.

Slingshot away from suffering.

Experience #3:

26 years later to the day of my arrival, on a surprisingly balmy evening around a bonfire at Ocean Beach in San Francisco, I brushed paths with the man I would step out with rock out with (at a Radiohead concert) a few nights later, marry a handful of years thereafter, and still keep-a-rocking with all these “lucky 13” years later.

Magnetic force to love.

These are just a few of the reasons why I so love love love you dear June.

You remind me that life can be about the choice to leap.

Leaping out from the brace of suffering.

Leaping into the net of fearless love.
